Lanolin consists of a natural liquid crystal matrix almost identical to human stratum corneum lipids. This intense natural hydrator binds 200 times its weight in water. It regulates the rate of trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and increases skin moisturisation. Dermal studies have shown that the duration of the emollient action and barrier repair properties produced by Lanolin is significant and lasts more than 8 hours. Lanolin is also known to form semi-occlusive (breathable) films on the skin. When applied daily for five consecutive days, the moisturising effects were still detectable 72 hours after final application.
